Honestly, the optimization part is not only on your website, but the content is important as well. If you have neglected SEO copywriting, it’s time for you to pay attention to it now. We’re not talking about basic copywriting skills, but great SEO copywriting skills.
When it comes to SEO copywriting, you have to write content with keywords and topics in mind. This is to help Google understands your content to rank it on the results page. Of course, there are a few technical aspects of SEO that you will need to follow, but first of all – you need to write quality and readable content for your visitors.

1) Focus On Quality Instead Of Quantity
It’s true that content is king, but that doesn’t mean that content quantity is more important than content quality. Google will still penalize sites with thin content that doesn’t offer valuable information to the readers. Therefore, it is important for us to focus and develop creating quality and actionable content that people are looking for.
As you write, ask yourself – what solution can I give to my readers?
You can also enhance your content by adding rich content like infographics, videos, and images that help to strengthen your content. When it comes to graphics, Canva is my favorite tool to create these extra benefits to the readers. Adding relevant and high-quality images in the content will also represent your professionalism in SEO copywriting.

Writing quality content also means to write as if you’re speaking directly to your readers. Explain in Layman’s terms and cut the jargon. Using powerful words like “Now,” “Amazing,” “Remarkable,” “Quick,” “Easy,” “Hurry,” “Boost,” and more will help to attract your readers to keep reading your content.
2) Target The Right Keywords
When writing content, don’t ever forget about keywords. Think of what will the user’s search for when they type into the Google search bar. Are they looking for information about your service or industry?
To target the correct keywords, keyword research is an important step to start with. If you’re not researching for which keywords have a higher search volume combined with considering the competitiveness, you’re doing SEO the wrong way. But it’s not too late to save your SEO campaign now.
Try using Keyword Planner by Google to find out your potential keywords and start writing.
Don’t forget to target location too; it will help with your local SEO. So let’s say you’re an SEO agency in New York City, “SEO agency” is probably too vague and competitive. Instead, you can try middle-tail keywords like”SEO agency in New York City” or “New York City SEO agency”.
When you have a more targeted keyword, you will stand a higher chance at ranking. Not just that, you’re also aiming the right audience that will bring you high-quality traffic that is more likely to convert to leads or sales.
3) Include Your Targeted Keyword In Title
What’s the first thing that your potential audience notices when you appear in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs)?
Yup, your headline. The headline is one of the most important on-page ranking factors. So if you don’t have the keyword in the title, the visitors and Google bots will not be able to find relevancy between your keyword and the headline.
But that doesn’t mean that you should create a long headline with all your keywords? No. Google will truncate your title when it’s too long, so it’s better to put your keywords at the beginning of your title rather than the end. To avoid being truncated, keep your headline less than 70 characters.
Although the headline is not always a direct ranking factor, it can get people to click to your site. So you want to come up with the best headline. Moz did research on this and found that headlines with numbers have the highest click-through rate (CTR) – just like how we did it in this article.
Apart from the title, using the keyword in the URL slug is also a good idea for Google to understand your URL. Just remember to keep it short and make sure it’s readable.
4) Use Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) Keywords
If you’re an SEO beginner, you might not be familiar with this term. So what exactly are LSI keywords?
LSI keywords are the keywords that are the synonyms or related words to your main keyword. Let’s say your main keyword is “SEO agency,” you should then include LSI keywords such as “SEO management agency” or “SEO marketing services” in your content because these keywords will help you be topical to for Google further understand what your page is about. (I usually get LSI keywords from LSIGraph.)
Don’t just use the main keywords that you’re targeting. Again, always think of what users might search for in the Google search bar. Then, start writing content with those keywords in mind. User’s questions are gold as they are the potential keywords that you can aim for.
Most importantly, Google also considers these LSI keywords to be very closely related to the keywords that your users are searching for. What this means to you is that with more related and relevant keywords in your content, it’s very likely that Google will get you ranked to provide users with informative content. Remember, this especially when copywriting blog content.
5) Avoid Keyword Stuffing
Even though having keywords in your content is very important, but don’t go overboard. Use keywords sparingly. Keyword stuffing is a bad practice done by SEO practitioners long time ago, resulting in Google changing its algorithms to penalize websites that do it. Once you get penalized, you may have to start your content marketing efforts from scratch. So you might want to avoid that.
Content with keyword spamming will not rank well compared to content that is relevant to the readers. In fact, keyword stuffing does not even work these days.
It might look easy for you to write content with the same keyword, but don’t be lazy, this is unnatural. It can diminish your website’s credibility and search rankings. Moreover, the readability of your content will be low as readers wouldn’t understand what you’re trying to say. With that, you will be losing more visitors and traffic.
6) Always Check Your Spelling And Grammar
When we talk about readability, spelling, and grammar should never be forgotten. These matter in your content because every search engine, especially Google strive to provide content that is useful and valuable to the readers. User experience plays a huge role.
If your website is filled with spelling and grammatical errors, your readers will less likely have a pleasant experience, and they will exit your site to the competitors. Let’s just admit this. Even we, as writers, we will immediately exit a page when we find numerous spelling and grammar mistakes in an article. The same goes to our readers. By proofreading your work multiple times, with multiple sets of eyes you resolve 99% of the issues.

Other than that, you should also use headings and subheadings to improve readability. This is particularly useful for readers who skim through your content. When your headings attract them, they will keep on reading. It’s best if you can include keywords in your headings as well. 7) Create Effective Call-To-Action (CTA)
If possible, try to include a CTA. I usually include this at the end of my article to increase the engagement with my readers. Like I always say, our content should be written in an easy-to-read format.
Try to ask your readers some questions – be it to exchange information or to keep in touch, it will help to build a better relationship and attract more traffic to your site. You know what they say; great content tends to have higher social media shares that lead to more traffic. At the end of the day, we need more leads to convert into sales.
Spotify is my favorite example of this; they have the best CTA that I’d love to share with you. As soon as you’re on the homepage, the message is obvious that they’re aiming to attract customers who are interesting in getting a premium account. Even the color contrast on the CTA buttons is enough to make it stand out on the page. This will draw even more attention to their CTAs.
Call to Action is the best place to tell your readers what to do. Be direct. If you want to give them an ebook to download, let them know. Say it, and they will give you your email. From there, you can then send them newsletters or sales letter to close your sales.
8) Earn And Link To Quality And Authoritative Websites
Always include data, statistics, charts, graphs, or reference in your content to back up and support your statement. Having data is a vital aspect of effective content. You can also link it to your source to add value for your readers.
Linking to other quality and authority sites is an indication that you appreciate what other people have created. Besides, it will also help to build a relationship with people within your industry.
When we talk about link earning, the first tip – writing quality content – is essential because having valuable and helpful content will result in people linking to your content. This will help you to rank on Google because the number of links pointing to your page is one of the factors for Google to measure authority.
It’s not just any websites, but relevant and high authoritative sites. If you purposely create 100 websites with the same content just to point more link to your main site, you will lose credibility when Google finds out about this. It doesn’t depend on how many incoming links you have, but rather on the quality links.
